If you’re looking for fantastic Mexican food, a family-friendly atmosphere and affordable prices, then pay a visit to El Palacio in Ozark, Alabama.

An Ozark Staple

El Palacio has been a staple of the Wiregrass region for half a century. If you drive by on a Friday or Saturday night, you’ll notice the restaurant is teeming over with diners. In fact, the Mexican eatery regularly welcomes visitors from all over the region. The parking lot is a hodgepodge of license plates from different cities, counties and states.

“I consider El Palacio to be not just a restaurant, but a destination,” said co-owner Ben Brown.

Brown and business partner Kevin Smith purchased El Palacio from its original owners eight years ago. The duo is planning to host special events later in the year to commemorate the restaurant’s 50th anniversary.

A Menu Full of Options

One of El Palacio’s most famous offerings doesn’t even require a menu to order. Its rave-worthy salsa is the first thing to greet you once you take a seat. Many have described it as spicy, unique and full of flavor – “hot sauce,” as it’s known by the locals.

When it comes time to order an entrée, it’s hard to go wrong. El Palacio’s signature specialty is the Mexican Steak Fingers, crafted from the restaurant’s own secret recipe. Brown had his own recommendation for first-time visitors.

“You can’t go wrong with the Chicken and Cheese Nachos,” Brown said. “They go great with a frozen margarita and salt on the rim.”

El Palacio mixes its margaritas from its own custom recipe. This attention to food quality is present in all other areas of the restaurant as well. All of the food served is 100 percent real ground beef, steak, chicken and cheese, free of fillers and pasteurizers. According to Brown, this is something that few Tex-Mex restaurants can claim.
